Chicago Women Take Action Statement: We Support Call for Help to End Gun Violence

CHICAGO–(ENEWSPF)–January 31, 2017. Chicago Women Take Action (CWTA) supports activists, elected officials, health professionals and everyone working to end the gun violence in Chicago. We reject the concept that Chicago is “Afghanistan.” We are not. We are a city with a devastating gun violence problem that mostly affects distressed communities. We do not need to further punish violence-plagued communities by sending in any kind of military.

We welcome assistance from the federal government: the Departments of Justice, Housing, Labor, and Health & Human Services. We welcome federal assistance in rebuilding infrastructure, which will provide jobs and resources for our distressed communities. We welcome assistance from the private sector:  jobs, small business opportunities, and investment in building businesses in our distressed communities. We welcome assistance from the medical profession and social services professionals who recognize that this violence is a public health crisis. We welcome assistance from communities from all over the city who want to see an end to the violence. We welcome any and all assistance in putting an end to the suffering of parents who have lost their children to gun violence. This is our city, these are our children, and we know that the solution to this gun violence is to invest in our children – invest in their schools and communities. This is the assistance we need. Investing in our children and their communities is the best investment that the federal government and private sector can make.

We call on our Illinois Senators, Dick Durbin and Tammy Duckworth, to seek federal funding for job creation in communities most affected by gun violence.

CWTA is a group of women united by a commitment to achieving women’s leadership and economic and social equality. We are activists of all ages and from diverse backgrounds working on the local, national and international level to promote women leaders and secure the health and well-being of women, their families, and their communities. CWTA was involved in planning the January 21st Chicago Women’s March. Learn more at ChicagoWomenTakeAction.com. Join us! Email [email protected].
