Food and Water Watch: Dallas Fracking Ordinance a Huge Step Forward in Oil Country

Statement of Eleanor Bravo, Southwest Organizer for Food & Water Watch

Washington, D.C.–(ENEWSPF)-December 12, 2013.  “Food & Water Watch applauds the work of FracDallas and other community organizations whose work was instrumental in yesterday’s 9-6 City Council decision to enact restrictions on oil and gas drilling in Dallas. Thanks to their hard work and commitment to protecting their community from the environmental and public health effects of drilling and fracking, the activity has now been blocked from taking place within 1,500 feet of a home, business or church.

“It is inspiring to see that even in the heart of oil country, legislators are realizing that communities must be protected from reckless oil and gas development. This is, after all, the same state in which controversy still brews over an abandoned EPA investigation regarding possible drinking water contamination from drilling and fracking.

“New technologies have made drilling and fracking for oil and gas more controversial and dangerous than ever. The techniques used today are not your grandparents’ oil and gas extraction methods. That is one of many reasons why communities and lawmakers around the United States are rejecting fracking.”

Food & Water Watch works to ensure the food, water and fish we consume is safe, accessible and sustainable. So we can all enjoy and trust in what we eat and drink, we help people take charge of where their food comes from, keep clean, affordable, public tap water flowing freely to our homes, protect the environmental quality of oceans, force government to do its job protecting citizens, and educate about the importance of keeping shared resources under public control.
