Michele Bachmann Lies Again: President Obama’s India Trip Will Not Cost $200 Million a Day

Commentary

Years ago, a friend told me, "You can’t protect yourself against a lie."

That’s true at times, especially when the lie is spread by those posing as members of the media.

U.S. Rep. Michele Bachman (R-Minn.) is manufacturing lies again, this time claiming an "anonymous Indian minister" said President Obama’s trip to India will cost taxpayers $200 million a day.

Absurd.

From the Chicago Sun-Times:

The cost of President Obama’s 10-day Asian trip has sparked heated discussions, blog posts and e-mails, with some commentators claiming the journey is costing $200 million per day.

The White House won’t say how much Obama’s trip will cost, but says the widely cited $200 million-a-day figure circulating on the Internet has "no basis in reality."

The number apparently comes from an anonymous Indian minister, who was quoted earlier this week in the Press Trust of India, the largest news agency in India. The number was then cited by U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.) and then made its way around the Internet.

The same Indian press account indicated the president will be protected by a 34-ship armada from the U.S. Navy, a figure that Pentagon spokesman Geoff Morrell called "absolutely absurd."

Bachman certainly has no wish to be factual. Given her history, she’s no doubt depending on the lie being carried by the right wing media, and that has already begun.

Absolutely absurd.
