Statement by SEIU President Mary Kay Henry responding to Sunday (Nov. 17) opinion pieces on the Affordable Care Ac:t by the editorial board of The New York Times on “The Shame of American Healthcare” lagging be hind that of other countries, and by three governors writing in the Washington Post on “How We Got Obamacare to Work.”
“As SEIU members know from hundreds of thousands of contacts they are making across this country, cooperation on implementing the new healthcare law is desperately needed for more Americans to have access to healthcare they can afford.
“A new report out last week by the Commonwealth Fund reminds us all of shocking statistics that our members who are nurses and doctors know apply to far too many uninsured and insured Americans alike – that roughly one in three go without medical care or medications because they can’t afford it.
“The Affordable Care Act give us all a chance to work together to change that reality and drive down costs for all of us. But only if the law is given a chance, and as three governors wrote in a joint op ed yesterday that means everyone working together across political lines to get the new healthcare law working.
It’s time for more state officials and members of Congress to have the courage to cooperate on the Affordable Care Act. “
