Sierra Club: State-commissioned Study Confirms that Fracking is a Threat to Environment

Washington, DC—(ENEWSPF)—July 9, 2015. Today, the California Natural Resources Agency released the final two independent scientific assessments of oil well stimulation treatments, including hydraulic fracturing, in California, as required under SB4 (Pavley, 2013). The studies, conducted by the California Council on Science and Technology, reviewed available scientific information on fracking to assess the impact fracking could have on water, air quality, earthquakes, wildlife, and public health.

In response, Sierra Club Executive Director Michael Brune issued the following statement:

“Today’s California Natural Resources Agency report confirms what we already know: dirty oil and gas fracking poisons our air and water.

“Instead of letting the oil and gas industry play unsupervised with dangerous chemicals at the expense of our families and our environment, Governor Brown should stop fracking in California right now. This would keep dirty, climate-polluting fossil fuels in the ground while we invest in truly clean, renewable sources of energy that don’t come with the threat of poisoned drinking water and climate disaster.”
