Sierra Club Statement on National Voter Registration Day

Washington, D.C.–(ENEWSPF)–September 25, 2012. Today is the first National Voter Registration Day, a non-partisan day of action encouraging Americans to register to vote.

In response, Michael Brune, Sierra Club Executive Director, issued the following statement:

“For the millions of Americans who care about clean air, clean water and a secure climate future, it’s hard to overstate how much at stake in this year’s election.  Yet, we sometimes take for granted our right to vote and choose the leaders who will help shape our children’s future – and many of our voices are never heard.

“According to the U.S. Census, 6 million Americans did not vote in 2008 because they did not know how to register or they missed their state’s voter registration deadline.  This year, groups from around the country and of all stripes are coming together for the first National Voter Registration Day to close that gap in our democracy.

“The Sierra Club is proud to support today’s effort with the Sierra Student Coalition, encouraging people to register at their current address and helping students on college campuses across the nation exercise their right to vote.”
