Statement of VoteVets on Jeff Sessions

WASHINGTON –(ENEWSPF)–January 10, 2017.  Below is the statement of Brian McGough, Iraq War Veteran, Purple Heart recipient, and Senior Adviser to VoteVets, on the nomination of Jeff Sessions, as he begins his confirmation hearings:

“Jeff Sessions’ racist past should be disqualifying — especially from the position of Attorney General.  As veterans, we swore to uphold the Constitution when we joined the military.  To have someone like Jeff Sessions overseeing civil rights, including voting rights, is anathema to the very idea of free and fair elections. We need to make sure that our veterans of all backgrounds are treated equally by the justice system, as well.

It is no shock that Donald Trump – who played to the ugliest racial fears in the election – would nominate someone like Jeff Sessions to oversee his agenda.  Those fears go against everything our military stands for.  For these reasons — along with many others — we must oppose his nomination to serve as our nation’s next Attorney General.”

Founded in 2006, and backed by over 450,000 supporters, the mission of VoteVets.org is to use public issue campaigns and direct outreach to lawmakers to ensure that troops abroad have what they need to complete their missions, and receive the care they deserve when they get home.  VoteVets.org also recognizes veterans as a vital part of the fabric of our country and will work to protect veterans’ interests in their day-to-day lives.   VoteVets.org is committed to the destruction of terror networks around the world – with force when necessary – to protect America. While non-partisan, the group is the largest progressive organization of veterans in America.
