CHICAGO HEIGHTS–(ENEWSPF)–April 18, 2017.  Dr. Terri L. Winfree, president of Prairie State College (PSC), was recently recognized with the 2017 Illinois Green Economy Network (IGEN) Presidential Leadership Award, in recognition of her outstanding leadership and tireless efforts in addressing and raising awareness about issues of sustainability on the PSC campus and in the community. The award was presented at the IGEN Annual Sustainability Conference on March 22 and 23.

Dr. Winfree was nominated for the award by PSC Sustainability Coordinator Allessandra Kummelehne.

Kummelehne says that since Dr. Winfree became president of PSC in 2013, the college has adopted a multitude of sustainability practices as a result of her support, encouragement and vision for a sustainable campus.

Under Dr. Winfree’s leadership, sustainability was integrated into the PSC’s strategic plan, and an Annual Sustainability Report was established to be presented to the PSC Board of Trustees. In 2014, the college launched “Lean and Green in 2014,” campaign to promote a variety of healthy lifestyle choices and sustainability initiatives throughout the year. PSC also was one of 11 Illinois community colleges that participated in IGEN’s Electric Vehicle Road Trip, and Dr. Winfree was one of several Illinois college presidents who signed the Department of Energy Workplace Charging Challenge Pledge signaling a commitment to provide plug-in electric vehicle (PEV) charging access for employees. In an effort to green our campus and provide a habitat for migrating butterflies, Dr. Winfree approved the installation of the campus’s first butterfly garden, and supports the preservation of 30-acres of green space which comprises the campus nature preserve.

“Dr. Winfree is not afraid to get her hands dirty,” Kummelehne added. “In fact, she has been spotted many times picking up trash on our campus and along Route 1 as part of our Adopt-A-Highway program,” she said.

“We are a small but mighty college due to the strong leadership Dr. Winfree provides.” Kummelehne said. “We are making a difference in the lives of our students and our community and we are doing so because of our intrepid leader.”
