Women’s Equality Day Event on August 26, Chicago Premiere of EQUAL MEANS EQUAL

CHICAGO–(ENEWSPF)–August 18, 2016 – “Celebrate” Women’s Equality Day with the Chicago premiere of Equal Means Equal at the Logan Theatre on Friday, August 26, 2016 at 6 p.m. The screening will be followed by a rousing panel discussion with local lawyers whose clients’ experience first-hand how laws exclude or harm women, presented by the Gender Equity Fund, the local fundraising arm of the American Association of University Women (AAUW-IL, Inc.).
Equal Means Equal is an unflinching look at how women are treated in the United States today. By following both real life stories and precedent setting legal cases, director Kamala Lopez discovers how outdated and discriminatory attitudes inform and influence seemingly disparate issues, from workplace matters to domestic violence, rape and sexual assault to the foster care system, the healthcare system and the legal system. Along the way, she reveals the inadequacy of present laws in place that claim to protect women, ultimately presenting a compelling and persuasive argument for the urgency of ratifying the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA).
Equal Means Equal is a groundbreaking exploration of gender inequality in the USA featuring activists, leaders and survivors. A brutal expose of a broken system, the film reignites the dialogue on full legal equality for all Americans, regardless of gender. The Documentary features Patricia Arquette, Gloria Steinem, Lakshmi Puri, Eleanor Smeal, Terry O’Neill, Kamala Lopez,  Representative Carolyn Maloney and Senator Robert Menendez.  Winner of the Audience Award for Best U.S. Documentary at Michael Moore’s Traverse City Film Festival.
The movie screening will be followed by a panel including:
  • Kara N. Ingelhart, Skadden Fellow Attorney (Lambda Legal)
  • Sister Bernadine Karge, OP, JD (“Nuns on the Bus”)
  • Neha Lall, Senior Attorney, Legal Assistance Foundation (LAF)
The panelists will discuss how their clients are impacted in evictions, immigration and employment, as well as how the ERA may help.

We are joining women in cities across the country, on this Women’s Equality Day to ask: Why do we celebrate a Women’s Equality Day in the United States when women still do not have Equal Rights?!” says Ruth Holt, president of AAUW-Chicago Branch, Inc., one of the donors behind the Chicago screenings.

“Three States More” is a strategy to revive the ERA ratification process, and HJRes51 is currently co-sponsored by every Illinois Democrat but one, as well as Senator Mark Kirk.  Illinois has not yet ratified the ERA.  SJRCA0024 is the Illinois resolution to correct that, and was introduced by Illinois state senator Heather Steans.  A similar resolution, introduced by state representative Lou Lang, was passed in the Senate in 2014.  However, when a headcount showed the resolution was just shy of the required 3/5s majority, it was not called to a vote in the House.
The movie screening and panel discussion will take place from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Logan Theatre, 2646 N Milwaukee Ave., Chicago, IL 60647. Advanced registration with a donation of $10 is strongly encouraged.  Register at www.emechicago.eventbrite.com
Ticket proceeds will benefit the Gender Equity Fund, Lambda Legal, and Legal Assistance Foundation (LAF).
