National Hurricane Center: Tropical Storm Katia Slowly Strengthening Over the Eastern Tropical Atlantic, August 30, 2011


Miami, Florida—(ENEWSPF)—August 30, 2011 – 11 AM AST.  The National Hurricane Center is reporting that Tropical Storm Katia is slowly strengthening over the eastern tropical Atlantic. 

As of this report, Katia is located 12.3 N, 33.4 W, about 640 miles (1010 km) WSW of the southernmost Cape Verde Islands.  Maximum sustained winds are 45 mph (75 km/h).  Present movement is WNW or 285 degrees at 18 mph (30 km/h).  Minimum central pressure is 1003 mb (29.62 inches).

Currently there have been no coastal watches or warnings issued. 

There are currently no hazards affecting land.
