Representative Jan Schakowsky Statement on Historic Paris Climate Deal

Washington, DC–(ENEWSPF)–December 14, 2015.  Today, negotiators in Paris reached a major climate agreement. Rep. Schakowsky issued the following statement in response:

“I thank and commend President Obama, Secretary Moniz, Secretary Kerry, their staffs, and our global partners who achieved this monumental agreement. I believe it will go down as one of the crowning achievements of the 21st Century.

“As I have often said, climate change is perhaps the greatest challenge facing our world today, and its consequences are already being seen in major droughts, superstorms, water shortages, and year-after-year heat records.

“For over two decades, the international community has worked to come to an agreement that would meaningfully address climate change while ensuring that all nations play a role in that work. The agreement reached today in Paris is the culmination of those efforts, and it is a major achievement.

“This agreement requires every nation to contribute to emissions reductions and climate resiliency. At the same time, it sets up a process to regularly monitor and reevaluate those commitments to ensure we stay on the right path.

“I am proud of this historic accomplishment and I will continue to do all that I can to support it and other efforts to address climate change.”
