Planned Parenthood and the National Latina Institute for Reproductive Health to Celebrate Poderosas: Champions of Latina Health in Congress

NEW YORK–(ENEWSPF)–September 11, 2012.  Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA) and the National Latina Institute for Reproductive Health (NLIRH) will honor the Latina members of Congress for their tireless support of women’s health and rights on Wednesday, September 12, in Washington, DC.

The Congresswomen who will be honored are Rep. Grace Napolitano (D-CA), Rep. Lucille Roybal-Allard (D-CA), Rep. Linda Sánchez (D-CA), Rep. Loretta Sanchez (D-CA), and Rep. Nydia Velázquez (D-NY).

Cecile Richards, president of PPFA, and Jessica González-Rojas, executive director of the NLIRH, will speak at the event. The reception will recognize the Latina members of Congress for their tireless work on behalf of millions of women as our country has faced the most aggressive legislative attacks on women’s health and rights in a generation.  In addition, the event will highlight the impact of the Affordable Care Act on Latina women’s access to health care, as well as the expansion of Planned Parenthood’s promotoras and breast health programs.

“Planned Parenthood is delighted to co-host this event and honor these wonderful advocates for women’s health,” said Cecile Richards. “Latina women and their families depend on access to preventive health care, like lifesaving breast cancer screenings, Pap tests, annual exams and affordable birth control. And these Congresswomen have been at the forefront of protecting access to women’s reproductive health and rights.”

“On behalf of millions of Latinas across the country, the National Latina Institute for Reproductive Health is proud to recognize these champions for our families and our futures,” said Jessica González-Rojas. “These strong Latinas have helped us achieve real gains, like access to contraception and the ability to plan the timing and spacing of our families without expensive co-pays through the Affordable Care Act. We look forward to working together to ensure that all Latinas can access quality care.”
