CHICAGO–(ENEWSPF)–April 15, 2014. Seventeen people, including nine Roosevelt University students, shaved their heads on March 20 in Schaumburg during a fundraising event led by two pharmacy students that has netted approximately $10,000 for the benefit of pediatric cancer research.
“We’re all in the practice of health care here at the College of Pharmacy,” said Alex Mersch, a third-year PharmD student at Roosevelt and one of the organizers of the head-shaving, fundraising event that benefits cancer research by the St. Baldrick’s Foundation.
“We will be learning about chemotherapy as part of our studies and an event like this helps us have a level of empathy that we otherwise might not have,” said Mersch, who co-led the St. Baldrick’s event with classmate Stephen Jankovic, who is also a third-year College of Pharmacy student.
“It seems everywhere you go, there is a story related to cancer. Everyone has been affected in some way or knows someone who has been affected and an event like this helps us rally around those we know as well as to support research that someday could find a cure for cancer,” said Jankovic.
It is the third year in a row that students in the College of Pharmacy have been involved in an annual fundraiser for the benefit of St. Baldrick’s – and this year’s drive was by far the most successful ever in terms of participation as well as funds raised.
Mersch and Jankovic said they hope the event will continue to be a College of Pharmacy tradition for years to come.
