University Park, Illinois–(ENEWSPF)–July 11, 2013 – The Kappa Kappa chapter of Lambda Pi Eta, the National Communication Honors Society, has created a chapter of Toastmasters International, one of the world leaders in communication and leadership development.
Toastmaster, a non-profit educational organization, was created in 1924 to teach public speaking and leadership skills. The organization has grown to a membership of more than 280,000 people of all backgrounds and professions with 3,500 clubs in 116 countries.
GSU’s toastmasters club is a collaborative endeavor between students, faculty and community leaders that will serve as a model of diversity and responsible citizenship. GSU is pleased to collaborate with our community partner, Mayor Vivian Covington of University Park who joined GSU’s Toastmaster’s Club as a charter member and sponsored membership for three GSU students.
In keeping with the mission of GSU, Toastmasters imbues students with the knowledge, skills and confidence to become connected not only to their communities, but globally. Toastmasters will serve as a powerful, experiential learning opportunity for GSU students and community members.
Under the guidance of University Lecturer Tammara R. Winn and with help from Assistant Dean of Students Sheree Sanderson, the new chapter is looking forward to encouraging community involvement and competing for the top awards for public speaking at the district, regional and national levels.
