CHICAGO—(ENEWSPF)—October 6, 2014. Rep. Jan Schakowsky, a founding member of the Congressional LGBT Equality Caucus, issued the following statement upon the Supreme Court’s decision not to hear a series of marriage equality cases:
“Today’s decision by the Supreme Court is another in a series of victories for LGBT equality. I am very happy for LGBT couples in Wisconsin, Indiana, Virginia, Utah and Oklahoma who can now marry and receive the same treatment under the law as traditionally married couples.
These victories are meaningful progress, but it is clear that the fight must continue. We will not rest until all LGBT Americans have the rights they deserve. Congress must pass the Respect For Marriage Act to repeal what remains of the extremely discriminatory Defense of Marriage Act and ensure that all families in all states are fully recognized and respected. It’s been said that LGBT Americans should not be allowed to get married on Saturday or Sunday only to face discrimination in the workplace on Monday. I couldn’t agree more.
So I will continue to work hard with my colleagues on the LGBT Equality Caucus to ensure the equal treatment of LGBT individuals under the law in all aspects of life.”
