SEIU: Better Care, Better Lives – Stories of the Affordable Care Act at Work

Washington, DC–(ENEWSPF)–March 21, 2012.  While the House Republican Budget proposed by Congressman Paul Ryan (R-WI) would privatize Medicare and shift greater healthcare costs to working families and seniors, the Affordable Care Act is achieving its vision of delivering better healthcare to millions of Americans, strengthening Medicare, and putting Americans, not insurance companies, in control of their own healthcare.

As the two-year anniversary of the law approaches, the nurses, doctors, and healthcare workers of the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) share their stories from the front lines of how the law is helping their patients and their families:

  • Tee McClenty of Minnesota shares how her son is healthier and she has financial security thanks to the expansion of coverage to young adults under age 26.
  • Denise Ybarra of California is a mother who can sleep at night and not worry about her daughter’s pre-existing condition.
  • Geriatric nurse Linda Bock knows her patients at a Maryland clinic will not be forced to skimp on lifesaving medications any longer.
  • Oncology nurse Kim Klinger sees how the law gives cancer patients in her Pennsylvania hospital a fighting chance.
  • Michael Core, MD, delivers better preventive care to children at his Los Angeles community health center thanks to the law.
  • Labor and delivery nurse Nadine White of Florida knows that no-cost preventive care will put us all on the path to better health and ensure healthier babies.

SEIU nurses like Carmen-Board Morales, a nurse practitioner who will be honored at the White House today as a “Champion of Change,” are committed to sharing the benefits and protections of the law with their fellow nurses and patients. “By reaching out to a cross section of nurses –operating room, emergency room, rural health and mental health — we can educate our patients about the Affordable Care Act in every day moments as they receive care. The law becomes real to them.”
