WASHINGTON, D.C.–(ENEWSPF)–October 5, 2010. Assistant Senate Majority Leader Dick Durbin (D-IL) today announced that the Department of Transportation’s (DOT) Federal Transit Administration has awarded a total of $9,868,000 in grant funding to five municipal governments and transit districts outside of Northeastern Illinois. The funding will be used to improve and maintain public transit systems, as well as renovate and expand public transit buildings. The Illinois Department of Transportation will administer this grant.
“This funding will help ensure that our public transit systems continue to provide safe and reliable service to the thousands of Illinoisans who ride them each day,” said Durbin.
The following municipal governments and transit districts will receive funding under today’s announcement:
Northern Illinois
* Whiteside County: $968,000 in funding for the renovation and expansion of a bus facility in Sterling, Illinois, to include vehicle storage space, a maintenance bay, and a wash bay system.
Central Illinois
* Macomb: $7,200,000 in funding for a new bus maintenance, storage, and administrative center.
* Quincy: $140,000 in funding for an automatic bus washing system capable of reusing water and soap.
Southern Illinois
* Rides Mass Transit District, Saline County: $1,520,000 in funding for the construction of a combination maintenance and dispatch facility.
* Shawnee Mass Transit District, Karnak, Pulaski County: $40,000 in funding for renovations and demolitions, as well as the paving of a parking lot.
