Attention all Park Forest procrastinators – vehicle stickers for the 2013-2014 period must be purchased and displayed on all vehicles registered in Park Forest by April 30, 2013. The cost of a vehicle sticker will increase to $75 if purchased May 1 – July 31, and will further increase to $125 if purchased after August 1. Park Forest Village Hall will be open Monday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Tuesday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. to assist with last minute purchases. To help ‘sweeten’ your waiting time, several of the Park Forest Community Garden groups will be holding a Bake Sale at Village Hall on Tuesday, April 30th. An assortment of home-baked items will be available to purchase. So even if you have already purchased your vehicle sticker, stop by Village Hall and purchase some goodies on Tuesday and help support the community garden project.

Opening day for the 40th season of the Park Forest Farmers’ Market will take place on Saturday, May 4th. The Farmers’ Market will take place from 7 a.m. to noon every Saturday through October 26th. Additional information about the Farmers’ Market can be found in the ‘Green Events’ section.

Grande Prairie Singers, Park Forest

Season’s Closing Concert – Sunday, May 19

The Grande Prairie Singers perform the music of some of the best contemporary composers Sun., May 19, with “American Choral Music Today.” The season’s closing concert begins at 4:00 p.m. at Faith United Protestant Church, 10 Hemlock St., Park Forest. The program includes works by Morten Lauridsen (“O Magnum Mysterium”), Eric Whitacre (“This Marriage,” “Lux Arumque”), Guy Forbes (“Ubi Caritas,” “O Nata Lux”), David Brunner (“I Am in Need of Music”), John Corigliano (“L’Invitation au Voyage”) and Robert Boyd (“Sing to Me, Guiding Stars”). In addition, GPS Assistant Director Darrell Dalton has written “Then I Saw a New Heaven” especially for the performance. The longtime Southland musician, instructor and composer set Carl Sandburg’s poem “Chicago” to music for the Grande Prairie Singers’ European concert tour in 2006. Park Forest House Museum — Step Back into a 1950s Easter – Through May 4

The 1950s Park Forest House Museum at 141 Forest Blvd, Park Forest, will have up its spring exhibit, “Step Back into a 1950s Easter,” from March 6 through May 4, 2013. Open Wednesday and Saturday 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., the museum can also be open for groups by appointment, at other times. Donation is $5 for adults; children 12 and under free with an adult. Scout and school tours are priced individually. Decorations include Easter die cuts, honeycomb rabbits and baskets, plastic and tin decorations, children’s books and Easter baskets with candy available in the 1950s. There is a very special display of hand blown, hand-painted eggs brought back from World War II. Park Forest Plaza Print for Sale

Annabelle Gould’s print of the Park Forest Plaza is available for sale at the Park Forest House Museum, 141 Forest Boulevard. The vibrant print is from an original watercolor, showing kids and their moms in the Park Forest Plaza, in front of the old Holiday Theatre and Golden Hanger Shop. The print can be purchased at the House Museum during normal hours of operation on Wednesdays and Saturdays or through the Society’s online store on their website at www.parkforesthistory.org. Summer Musical Theatre Camp to Feature Songs, Dances from the Wonderful Land of Oz – Registration Now in Progress

Follow the Yellow Brick Road to this summer’s Musical Theatre Camp at GSU’s Center for Performing Arts. This year’s camp, from June 17 to 21, takes its inspiration from “The Wizard of Oz” as young participants learn classic songs like “Over the Rainbow” and valuable theater skills. Campers develop a mini-musical based on “The Wizard of Oz” and perform a one-time-only production at the center on Friday, June 21 at 7 p.m. During the camp, students will learn songs, choreography, and scenes from the play. Professional coaches will work with campers on scene study, voice, diction, improvisation, singing and dancing. Musical Theatre Camp is open to children ages 7 to 13. Camp takes place six hours each day, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The cost is $250 for the week; the price of the camp also includes four tickets for the Friday night performance. Five Shows Coming in April & May in the Visual Arts Gallery

As spring arrives, the Visual Arts Gallery at GSU is bustling with rousing, exciting exhibitions. The Gallery is offering four student shows in April as well as a stimulating multimedia show, “Sitting on Two Stools/You Cannot Sit on Two Stools,” that examines the meaning of home. “Sitting on Two Stools/You Cannot Sit on Two Stools” will take place through April 30 and features the work of Debbie James and Dejana Erish. Rediscovering Chicago Heights ‘Community Photo-Voice Project’ – Through May 11

Compiling the photographs by the citizen photographers and the two professional photographers, Union Street Gallery will present an exhibition of photography which celebrates diversity, beauty, meaning and positive aspects of the Chicago Heights community. The entire Chicago Heights community will be invited to view the exhibition through May11. The gallery will be hosting an arts & Jazz Festival Saturday May 11th to celebrate the project, the exhibit, and community of Chicago Heights. All events are free and open to the public. The Mobile Workforce Center’s mobile unit will be at GSU every Tuesday, from 9:30 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., parked near the university’s front entrance. ‘Basic Canning’ Presentation – Limited Seating – Monday, April 29

Based on numerous requests from members of the community, the Park Forest Environment Commission has arranged for Chef Kate Bradley to give a presentation on ‘Basic Canning’ on Monday, April 29 at 7 p.m. at the Wetlands Discovery Center, 30 N. Orchard, Park Forest (located on the west side of the Park Forest Aqua Center). Kate will provide an overview of basic canning techniques and familiarize participants with the equipment needed to successfully can the fruits of your summer gardens for enjoyment in the cold winter months. Participants will also enjoy light refreshments canned from Kate’s kitchen. Seating for this event is limited and tickets are selling quickly. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased in advance or on the night of the event if any remain. Proceeds from the event will be used for the benefit of the Park Forest Community Garden project. Park Forest Community Garden Bake Sale – Tuesday, April 30

On Tuesday, April 30th beginning at 9 a.m., representatives from several of the Park Forest Community Gardens will be holding a Bake Sale in the lobby of Village Hall, 350 Victory Drive. A selection of yummy, home-baked goods will be available to purchase. Proceeds from this event will benefit those gardening groups participating in the Bake Sale.

2013 Park Forest Community Garden Project

The Village of Park Forest will once again offer residents the opportunity to use vacant, Village-owned property for purposes of developing a community garden. Gardening groups using Village-owned lots will be reimbursed up to $370 for allowable gardening expenditures. This $370 reimbursement represents the amount that the Village would pay to have the lot maintained over the course of the summer. If you would like to garden, but don’t want to take on an entire Village-owned lot, we can assist you in finding a group where you can try out your ‘green thumbs’! National Kids to Parks Day – Saturday, May 18, 2013

Hundreds of thousands of children nationwide, including here in Park Forest will take part in a grassroots movement to discover America’s parks through play on Saturday, May 18, to commemorate National Park Trust’s (NPT) third annual National Kids to Parks Day. A special commemorative National Kids to Parks Day is being planned for 10:00 am to 2:00 pm at Central Park, and all are invited to start their day of play there and adventure out to all Park Forest’s other outdoor spaces throughout the day. Activities planned especially for Park Forest include outdoor games in Central Park hosted by the Park Forest Police Department and PAAC as well as guided tours of the Central Park Wetlands. Other special activities include fun spaces to “Discover Art” to “Discover Health” and to “Discover Science.” Plan to enjoy the day with family and friends and get a jump start on a healthy, fun summer in the parks! Discussion of ‘Park Forest’s Sustainability Plan’ – Wednesday, May 8

The League of Women Voters of the Park Forest Area will host an educational meeting on the topic of the park Forest Sustainability Plan on Wednesday, May 8 at 7 p.m. at the Park Forest Public Library, 400 Lakewood Boulevard. The Sustainability Plan focuses on how to make Park Forest sustainable now and in the future in the areas of the environment, the economy and in equity issues, such as education, housing, health and culture. Sarah Coulter, a consultant for TERRA Engineering and currently serving as the Sustainability Coordinator for the Village of Park Forest, will present the plan and lead a discussion on how these efforts will enable Park Forest to continue to be a strong community. Park Forest received a technical assistance grant from the Chicago metropolitan Agency for Planning (CMAP) to develop the Sustainability Plan which was adopted in May, 2012. Her role is to work with the Village staff, residents and business owners of the community in the implementation of the plan. ‘Bike and Hike Benefit for Thorn Creek Woods’ – Registration Required by Thursday, May 9

On Saturday, May 11 from noon to 4 p.m., the ‘Bike and Hike Benefit for Thorn Creek Woods’ will take place. Ride your motorcycle or bicycle to Thorn Creek Nature Center, 247 Monee Road, Park Forest, and savor homemade soups, tour the Nature Center and enjoy a two mile hike. Hiking is on natural surface trails across uneven terrain. This benefit event is in memory of the late Joe Hanes. Joe and his wife Alice were early supporters of Thorn Creek Woods and longtime members of the Chicago Region BMW Motorcycle Owners Association. Co-sponsors of the event are: Friends of Thorn Creek Woods, Chicago Region BMW Motorcycle Owners Association, Park Forest Environment Commission, and Garden Club of Park Forest. Wednesday Morning Walkers – May 1

Every Wednesday morning through June 19 from 7:30 a.m. to 9 a.m., those ages 11 through adult can follow the forest’s spring changes, enjoy light exercise and experience nature firsthand on Thorn Creek’s winding trails. Thorn Creek Morning Bird Hike – Registration Required by Thursday, May 16

Those 10 and older are invited to join the Thorn Creek naturalist for a Morning Bird Hike on Saturday, May 18 from 8 am. to 10 a.m. May is the peak of the spring migration, with gnatcatchers, kinglets, thrushes and warblers in great abundance. As the season progresses, Thorn Creek Woods is bustling with a flurry of activity as local birds build nests and raise their young. Phoebes, bluebirds, woodpeckers and hummingbirds are a few of the summer residents that you might be lucky to see. Even on the rainy, colder days, birds are active, so come dressed for the weather because we will be birding rain or shine. A bird guide and binoculars are recommended. Experience the Thorn Creek Nature Center

Thorn Creek Nature Center is housed in a historic building, originally Immanuel Lutheran Church of Matteson, Illinois built in 1862, and later Village Bible Church of Park Forest. A gothic frame country church, its notable architectural features include curved ceiling, tongue-and-groove paneling and a raised pulpit. Its current attractions are displays of the preserve’s flora and fauna, a bird feeder viewing area, Eugene E. Schwartz reference library and an expanded children’s section. ‘Birds and Wildlife of Ecuador’ – Wednesday, May 1

On Wednesday, May 1 at 7 p.m. at the Park Forest Public Library, 400 Lakewood Boulevard, Marilyn Campbell will present ‘Birds and Wildlife of Ecuador.’ Ecuador is a South American country located on the equator. The country is about twice the size of the state of Illinois; its topography includes rain forests and the Andes mountains. Living there are a wide variety of colorful birds as well as many monkeys, lizards, iguana, and butterflies. Marilyn Campbell is currently the editor of ‘Illinois Audubon’ magazine. The event is free and open to the public.

Volunteers Needed for Spring Bird Count – Saturday, May 4

TCAS will hold its annual spring bird count on Saturday, May 4. This year, as always, they need volunteers to cover areas in the field as well as feeder watchers. All levels of experience form beginner to expert are welcome. This is a prime time of year to spot migrants and unusual species. Park Forest Farmers’ Market 40th Season – Begins Saturday, May 4

Every Saturday morning beginning May 4 through October 26th, you’ll find that the Park Forest Farmers’ Market has something for everyone. The Market opens at 7 a.m. and ends at noon.  Rain or shine, come and enjoy fresh produce, bakery items, gourmet cheeses, and herbs. In addition, your favorite local businesses set up shop under their awnings with artwork, garden ornaments, candles and more! Park Forest Vehicle Stickers and Animal Tags – MUST Be Displayed by April 30th

Vehicle stickers for the 2013-2014 year are now on sale. Vehicle stickers must be purchased and displayed on all vehicles registered in Park Forest by April 30, 2013. Vehicle stickers can be purchased at Park Forest Village Hall, 350 Victory Drive, the Park Forest Currency Exchange, 98 S. Orchard Drive, and the Richton Park Currency Exchange, 2710 Sauk Trail. Stickers can now be purchased through the internet by clicking here.

Scroll to Park Forest and follow the instructions. Note that a $3 convenience fee will be added to your transaction. Your sticker will be mailed to you. Animal tags are also on sale and are available at Village Hall only. Animal tags should also be purchased and made visible on your pets before April 30, 2013. Please note: a current rabies vaccination certificate must be presented with your animal tag registration form.

South Suburban Family Shelter (SSFS) is seeking cell phone donations for their ongoing fundraising program.
