South Holland, IL-(ENEWSPF)- South Suburban College student Rebecca Garcia was sworn in for her second term as the SSC Student Trustee at the college’s April meeting of the Board of Trustees.

“I’m very grateful and humbled to be given the opportunity to serve as the student representative to the Board of Trustees for another term,” said Garcia. “My goals are still to advocate for our students and engage them in every way possible. South Suburban College has enormous opportunities available and we [the students] need to be aware of what those are and how to use them.”

Ms. Garcia, a resident of Dolton, Illinois, returned to school to pursue her degree and is currently studying Political Science at SSC. Garcia has been a big proponent of sustainability and green initiatives on campus, and played an active role in the college’s recent recognition from Governor Pat Quinn and the Green Governments Coordinating Council as a “Bronze Level Compact School” within the Illinois Campus Sustainability Compact program. She is the first president of the SSC Green Club, and regularly participates in SSC Student Leadership programs and events. She also works at SSC’s Business & Career Institute as a Testing & Course Facilitator.

Garcia added, “In the upcoming year I plan to work more diligently with the Student Advisory Committee of the Illinois Community College Board on items that effect community college students across the state, such as transferring, MAP grants, the Dream Fund, and most recently a campaign on anti-bulling and suicide prevention. “
