7.6 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Oaxaca, Mexico


President Obama’s 13-year old Daughter Malia and Schoolmates on Spring Break in Oaxaca

Oaxaca, Mexico-(ENEWSPF)–March 20, 2012. The United States Geological Survey reports that a 7.6 magnitude earthquake struck Oaxaca, Mexico, today. The quake hit today, Tuesday, March 20, 2012 at 01:02:48 PM (CDT) – Central Daylight (Chicago) at a depth of 17.5 km (10.9 miles).

The epicenter was 136 km (84 miles) SSW of Huajuapan de Leon, Oaxaca, Mexico; 162 km (100 miles) WSW of Oaxaca, Oaxaca, Mexico; 170 km (105 miles) SE of Chilpancingo, Guerrero, Mexico; and 322 km (200 miles) SSE of MEXICO CITY, D.F., Mexico.

While perceived shaking was reported as strong, the USGS reports potential damage to be light.

The White House reports that President Obama’s 13-year old daughter Malia and her schoolmates are on spring break in Oaxaca near the epicenter of the quake.  A White House spokesperson says that Mailia and her schoolmates are safe and were ‘never in danger.’
