Indianapolis, IN–(ENEWSPF)–February 24, 2011. Senate lawmakers on Tuesday voted 28 to 21 in favor of legislation, SB 192, which calls for a legislative review of the state’s criminal marijuana enforcement policies. The measure now awaits action from the House of Representatives.
If enacted, the measure would establish a legislative committee to assess the costs associated with marijuana law enforcement and to consider other public policy alternatives such as ‘decriminalization.’
Approximately six percent of all arrests in Indiana are for marijuana offenses, mostly minor possession offense. Under existing state law, a minor marijuana possession offense is classified as criminal misdemeanor punishable by up to one year in jail and a $5,000 fine.
