Readout of Secretary Panetta’s Meeting with Jordan’s King Abdullah. August 2, 2012

Washington, DC–(ENEWSPF)–August 2, 2012.  Acting Assistant Secretary of Defense for Public Affairs George Little provided the following readout:

“Secretary Panetta had an excellent meeting with King Abdullah in Amman today, where he reiterated the U.S. commitment to its strategic relationship with Jordan, and to the strong defense relationship between the two countries.  Their discussion focused on regional security challenges, most notably Syria and recent refugee flows into Jordan.  They talked not only about how to deal with the current crisis that is being fueled by the intolerable acts of the Assad regime, but also the prospects for political transition in a post-Assad Syria.  They agreed that strong international pressure needs to be sustained to make it clear that Assad must go, and that the Syrian people deserve to determine their own future.  The secretary pledged that the United States will work with Jordan to explore ways to continue to provide humanitarian aid to those affected by violence in Syria.”
