South Sudan: Two Peacekeepers Killed, One Injured as UN Continues to Shelter Thousands of Civilians

South Sudan–(ENEWSPF)–20 December 2013 – The United Nations peacekeeping Mission in South Sudan has confirmed that the bodies of two of its soldiers killed in action have been transported to the capital of Juba today, while a third soldier is receiving medical aid in the mission’s facility in Malakal.

The three soldiers, members of the UN Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) Indian Battalion, were attacked yesterday during an attack on the base in Akobo Town in Jonglei State.

“We call on all parties to the crisis to refrain from further violence and seek a peaceful resolution to the crisis,” the Mission said in a statement strongly condemning the attack and the continued violence in parts of the country.

The UN has sent aircraft early this morning to evacuate some UN personnel from the base which perimeter had been breached yesterday by apparent ethnic Lou Nuer youth intent on reaching the civilians inside.

There are indications that civilians have been killed and wounded in the attack. In a statement, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said that should these reports prove true, “those responsible must be held accountable for their crimes.”
