WASHINGTON, D.C.–(ENEWSPF)–September 13, 2011. Service Employees International Union (SEIU) issued the following statement in response to Mitt Romney’s speech curtailing the basic rights of workers:
“As millions of unemployed and underemployed Americans search for work or try to hold on to their current jobs, Mitt Romney continues his assault on working and middle class people,” said SEIU President Mary Kay Henry. “Mitt Romney’s speech today on the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) demonstrates that he is interested in scoring cheap political points and catering to the most extreme elements of his party.
“But Mitt’s desperate political stunts are not just obvious to me, they are clear to the actual working men and women who have made this country strong.”
“All candidates for president, including Mitt Romney, need to spend less time undermining workers’ right and more time putting themselves in our shoes,” said Curry Ervin, who cleans office building in St. Louis, Missouri. “But Romney continues to attack workers and unity in the work place. To me, it seems like he just doesn’t get it.”
“By attacking the National Labor Relations Board, Romney is seeking to appease far right members of his party, who would ensure tax giveaways to big oil and corporations that send American jobs overseas,” said Henry.
“This comes as no surprise. Romney has a history of looking out for the interests of rich corporate executives like himself. His former company, Bain Capital, had a troubling pattern of activities profiting with a $100 million return on their $5 million investment in Ampad, which eventually went into bankruptcy. They also acquired a plant in Marion, Indiana where workers were fired and then rehired at a lower wage.
“Romney should abandon the attacks on working Americans and the institutions that were created to protect them.”
