Ag Company Offers Calcium Products Ideal for Fall Application

If you had mostly dandelions on your lawn last spring, it’s probably because your soil wanted to grow dandelions and not grass. The so-called weeds, in other words, were messengers sent by Mother Nature to tell property owners something about life below ground.

It was that common belief — that lawns and gardens are best maintained with an emphasis on soil — that led NatraTurf and the non-profit SafeLawns Foundation to announce an educational partnership on the eve of lawn renovation season across much of North America.

“Too often this fall people will reach for a toxic pesticide spray or granule to kill a weed or insect without understanding why that organism showed up in the first place,” said SafeLawns Foundation founder Paul Tukey, author of The Organic Lawn Care Manual. “NatraTurf understands that sustainably safe lawn care and gardening is based partly on making calculated amendments to the soil to create an ideal environment for grass or other crops. With the company’s long history in sustainable agriculture, NatraTurf is a very, very welcome addition to the retail lawn and garden marketplace.”

NatraTurf, a subsidiary of Calcium Products of Gilmore City, sells soil amendments including gypsum and calcium that are mined from naturally occurring sources in Iowa. In recent years, experts at SafeLawns and elsewhere have identified calcium as a major limiting factor in poor lawn quality. Autumn is the best time to apply these products to lawns and gardens for the optimum results next spring.

“NatraTurf is proud to partner with Paul Tukey and Safelawns.org,” said brand manager Brian Milam, a PGA golf professional and certified golf course superintendent. “We realize the importance of partnering with an organization that is committed to educating that you can have not only a beautiful, but a safe, sustainable and environmentally responsible lawn and garden.”

SafeLawns, a national 501(c)(3) non-profit organization founded in 2006, offers free how-to videos for homeowners at SafeLawns.org, as well as educational sessions for do-it-yourselfers and professionals across the United States and Canada.
