Spartan Roundup Week of April 13, 2026 through April 19, 2026

Chicago Heights, IL—(ENEWSPF)— Marian Catholic Athletics had a full week of spring action as the Spartans picked up key wins in baseball, celebrated a first victory in boys’ volleyball, and turned in strong performances across softball, soccer, tennis, and track & field. This week’s Spartan Roundup follows.

⚾ Baseball Spartan Roundup (11–6, 3–1 ESCC)

The Spartans put together an impressive 4–1 week and remain tied for first place in the ESCC standings.

On Monday, Apr. 13, Marian defeated Joliet Catholic Academy 8–4 at Slammers Stadium in Joliet. Freshman Aiden Garcia made his first varsity start on the mound, pitching four innings while allowing five hits, three earned runs, and striking out two to earn the win. Sophomore Lacey Rogers went 2-for-3 at the plate.

The Spartans followed with a dramatic 9–6 walk-off victory over Joliet Catholic Academy on Tuesday, Apr. 14. Trailing 6–3 entering the bottom of the seventh inning, Marian rallied to load the bases. With two outs, Sophomore Jemayas Davis worked a bases-loaded walk to cut the deficit to one. Moments later, Junior Cayden Cortez-Blakely crushed a first-pitch walk-off grand slam to seal the comeback win.

On Thursday, Apr. 16, Marian defeated Bishop Noll Institute 7–4. Freshman Chase Boykin went 3-for-4 with an RBI, while Junior Jazarris Mackmore delivered a go-ahead two-run inside-the-park home run in the sixth inning.

The Spartans split a doubleheader with St. Patrick on Saturday, Apr. 18. In Game 1, Marian won 13–3 in five innings behind a complete-game effort from Senior Matthew Gonzalez, who struck out five. Rogers and Garcia each drove in three runs. In Game 2, Marian fell 7–5 despite Mackmore going 2-for-4 with a two-run home run. Sophomore Bronx DeBergh pitched 5 2/3 innings with six strikeouts.

🥎 Softball Spartan Roundup (7–9, 0–2 ESCC)

The Spartans battled through a challenging week, playing three tightly contested games.

On Tuesday, Apr. 14, Marian dropped a 7–5 marathon decision in 14 innings to Hanover Central, ranked No. 5 in Indiana. Trailing 4–0 entering the sixth inning, the Spartans rallied to tie the game. In the 11th inning, Freshman Jordan Jackson hit a game-tying home run after Hanover had taken the lead. Hanover eventually scored two runs in the 14th to secure the win. Junior Jackie Pollock pitched all 14 innings and struck out 17 batters.

On Thursday, Apr. 16, Marian fell 1–0 to Peotone in a pitchers’ duel decided in the bottom of the seventh inning. Pollock was dominant again, allowing just one hit while striking out 10 in 6 2/3 innings. Senior Ella DeNormandie and Freshman Melissa Thompson recorded hits.

The Spartans were edged 2–1 by Carmel Catholic in Game 1 of Saturday’s doubleheader. Pollock struck out nine, while Freshman Jasmin UrquizoFreshman Evelyn AyalaJunior Mya DavisSophomore Maeve Welsh, Thompson, and Senior Morgan McMahon each recorded hits.

In Game 2, Marian fell 11–6. Ayala pitched all seven innings and allowed only three earned runs, but defensive miscues proved costly. Ayala went 2-for-3 with an RBI, while Welsh finished 2-for-3 with a double and three RBIs.

🏐 Boys Volleyball Spartan Roundup (1–7)

The Spartans earned their first win of the season on Monday, Apr. 13, defeating Chicago High School for Agricultural Sciences in straight sets at home.

The victory marks an important milestone as Marian continues to build momentum through the spring season.

🎾 Boys Tennis Spartan Roundup (4-2, 0-2 ESCC)

The Spartans competed in two matches during the week.

On Tuesday, Apr. 14, Marian fell 5–0 to Nazareth Academy at home.

The Spartans returned to action Thursday, Apr. 16, dropping a road match to Joliet Catholic AcademySophomore Nate Banks earned Marian’s lone victory, winning in straight sets 7–5, 6–4.

⚽ Girls Soccer Spartan Roundup (2–6, 0–2 ESCC)

The Spartans were in action three times during the week.

On Monday, Apr. 13, Marian fell to Shepard 4–3 in the Body Armor Invite. Sophomore Alex Spraggins scored two goals, while Sophomore Nyla Williams added one goal and two assists.

On Wednesday, Apr. 15, Marian dropped a road contest to Nazareth Academy 5–0.

The Spartans returned home Friday, Apr. 17, falling to Benet Academy 8–0.
