April Ribbon Cutting Honored Men’s Championship Team
University Park, IL—(ENEWSPF)— Just weeks before the soccer complex ribbon cutting at Governors State University (GovState), the Athletics Department welcomed Jose “Tony” Gonzalez as the new Head Men’s Soccer Coach.
Before coming to GovState, Gonzalez was the head coach of the men’s and women’s soccer teams at South Suburban College (SSC). There, he worked with the men’s team for 25 seasons and the women’s team for nine years. During Gonzalez’s time at SSC, the women’s team shone. They played in five consecutive National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region IV finals. SSC competed in the NJCAA championships. He compiled a record of 287-157-39 in 25 seasons as men’s coach at SSC. His record as women’s coach was 101-31-8 over nine years.
Gonzalez Was Region 4 Women’s Coach of the Year in 2022 and 2026.

Coach Tony played collegiate soccer for the UIC Flames. He was named Academic All-Conference in 1995 and earned the Soccer Student-Athlete of the Year in 1997. In 2002, he also served as the top assistant at UIC. González has trained and coached players of all ages and levels. In the summer of 2003, he earned the USSF National “B” license.
Coach González is a 1997 graduate of the University of Illinois at Chicago. Coach Tony has a Bachelor of Arts in the Teaching of Spanish. In 1996-97. He was at Western Illinois University 1992-94.
From 2008 to 2010, he earned an MA in Education Administration & Supervision, St. Xavier University, Chicago.
From 2004 to the present, Gonzalez served as the Director of South Suburban Soccer Academy, a youth soccer program in the South Suburbs of Chicago, IL.
On Friday, April 24, Gonzalez will join Governors State officials to cut the ribbon at a new soccer complex near the Prairie Place residence hall. The event will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. to showcase the new field and to honor the University’s Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) championship men’s soccer team with a special ring ceremony. In addition to the ring ceremony, there will be a presentation of varsity jackets to the soccer team and a soccer skills contest.
