Rep. Schakowsky speaking with Shimon Peres alongside Michael Kotzin.

Washington, DC – Today, Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky released the following statement after joining President Obama as part of the U.S. delegation to attend the funeral of former Israeli Prime Minister and President Shimon Peres:

“I was honored to join President Obama and the U.S. delegation that traveled to Israel for the funeral for former Israeli Prime Minister and President Shimon Peres. It was a fitting tribute to an exemplary man and statesman who helped guide Israel from its birth as a nation. He was a tireless advocate for peace and an extraordinary leader. Shimon Peres fought for peace and security for Israel. As the President stated, ‘He understood from hard-earned experience that true security comes through making peace with your neighbors.’ His passion for making peace, despite a background of hard-ship and heartbreak, was deep and enduring. I am grateful to have been able to pay my respects to a truly remarkable world leader who strived to make the world a better place.”
