University Park, IL–(ENEWSPF)– Not only will the art of Flossmoor resident Jeff Stevenson be showcased at the 11th Annual “Chicago Art Open” this October, but Stevenson was also awarded the Curator’s Choice Award from among 300 artists participating in the exhibit.

The Chicago Art Open is produced by the Chicago Artists’ Coalition, the city’s largest visual arts service organization. The exhibition takes place from Friday, October 3 through Sunday, October 19, in the Merchandise Mart, 222 Merchandise Mart Plaza, in Chicago’s River North neighborhood.

Stevenson will present the work "Predecessors," which was selected by a panel of three distinguished jurors: Candida Alvarez and Kymberly Pinder, Ph.D., both of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago; and Catherine Edelman of Catherine Edelman Gallery, Chicago. The work is a mixed media collage that combines altered books, acrylic paint, oil paint on canvas, and a wax technique.

“This work is personal. Some of the imagery has to do with the idea of ancestry and our predecessors. It is an analogy to how we learn our history,” says Stevenson.

Stevenson is currently an adjunct professor of art at Governors State University. He grew up in Marion, Ohio, and earned degrees from Ohio State University and Ohio University in Athens.

“I was trained in painting but different interests have led me to relief sculpture. When my work hangs on a wall, it has depth,” explains Stevenson. “It is a process of taking painting and bringing it into the third dimension without going into full sculpture.”

The Chicago Art Open has been an integral part of Chicago Artists’ Month, a citywide celebration of the arts coordinated by the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs, since 1998. The theme of this year’s Chicago Artists’ Month is “Artists and Issues that Matter.

“I’m thrilled to be a part of this fantastic event celebrating Chicago Artists’ Month and to have my work distinguished with a Curator’s Choice Award among 300 artists,” adds Stevenson.

The Chicago Art Open will run October 3 through 19, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is free, with a suggested donation of $5 per person. The formal opening benefit will take place on Friday, October 3, from 6 to 10 p.m. For more information about the Chicago Art Open, visit www.chicagoartopen.org, or call (312) 781-0040.
