Seasonal City Program Provides Chicagoans with an Easy and Environmentally-Friendly Tree Disposal Service
CHICAGO—(ENEWSPF)—December 29, 2014. Mayor Rahm Emanuel, along with the Chicago Department of Streets and Sanitation (DSS) in partnership with the Chicago Park District, today announced that the City’s annual Christmas tree recycling program will run from Saturday, January 3 through Saturday, January 17, 2015 at 23 locations citywide. Last year, Chicagoans recycled more than 10,000 trees.
“The City’s Christmas tree recycling program is an easy and environmentally-friendly alternative for residents to dispose of their trees,” said Mayor Emanuel. “Each year through the Christmas tree recycling program, we are able to divert thousands of Christmas trees away from landfills for reuse in our community.”
Live Christmas trees can be dropped off inside tree corrals set up at any one of the 23 designated Chicago Park District locations. Ornaments, lights and tinsel must be removed before the tree is dropped off. The Christmas Tree recycling program is not able to accept wreaths or garlands. Trees should be removed from any bags when placing them in the tree recycling corrals.
“Recycling your Christmas tree is not the only way Chicagoans can be green this season,” said DSS Commissioner Charles L. Williams. “Residents have many options for reducing their impact on our environment from recycling cardboard gift boxes in their Blue Carts to saving wrapping paper and bows for next year.”
Additionally, select recycling locations will have free mulch available for residents to pick-up beginning on Tuesday, January 6.
”We’re excited to provide Chicagoans an opportunity to help protect the environment by recycling their live Christmas trees this holiday season and in return provide free mulch to our residents starting January 6, when available at select locations,” said Michael P. Kelly, General Superintendent and CEO of the Chicago Park District.
