Chicago, IL-(ENEWSPF)- Cook County Clerk David Orr has issued 80 marriage licenses to same-sex couples – 46 on Friday and 34 through 3 p.m. today.
On Friday, the Clerk’s downtown office stayed open an extra two hours, until 7 p.m., to issue marriage licenses on the first day they were available to same-sex couples. On Monday, the Clerk’s suburban offices also issued licenses to same-sex couples.
Of the 80 couples who were issued a marriage license by 3 p.m. on Monday:
- 44 were male, 36 were female
- The youngest person was 18 years old
- The oldest (both partners of the same couple) were 80
- The average age was 41 among Friday applicants and 36 among Monday applicants
- Most licenses were issued to Chicago residents. The most popular zip codes were 60640 (7); 60626 (6); 60657, 60647, and 60618 (3 each)
- Suburban couples who were issued a license lived in: Tinley Park, Oak Park, Des Plaines, Evanston, Evergreen Park, Schaumburg, Streamwood and Justice
- Six couples were from another county: Champaign (1), Du Page (2), Lake (1), Will (1), Winnebago (1)
- 2 couples were from out-of-state, one each from Indiana and Wisconsin
- The couples listed a wide range of occupations: student, attorney, graphic artist, steel worker, social worker, police officer, physician, chef, homemaker, waitress and architect, to name a few
- 31 were already in a civil union and had the $60 fee waived
