Indict the System on MLK Day, Jan. 15 in Federal Plaza

Chicago—(ENEWSPF)—January 13, 2015 — A group of lawyers, law students, and legal workers of color will gather in Chicago at the Federal Plaza (Adams & Dearborn) to indict the system on Thursday, January 15th at 12:00pm because “the system is not broken; it is doing exactly what it was designed to do and what it has been doing for centuries,” TUPOCC member and civil rights attorney, Iveliz Orellano, said.

The action is taken in solidarity with the racial justice and anti-police brutality protests recently sweeping the country following the murders of black people at the hands of police. TUPOCC’s position is that the failure to indict or otherwise hold accountable police who murder, maim, and dehumanize black people and other people of color is not a failure of the system; it is its design. TUPOCC plans to perform a public reading of the allegations against “the system,” which is a catch-all phrase that includes the U.S. government and military, the criminal justice system, and other institutions in this country that have committed crimes against people of color.

The National Lawyers Guild was founded in 1937 and is the oldest and largest public interest/human rights bar organization in the United States. Its headquarters are in New York and it has chapters in every state. The United People of Color Caucus is an alliance of law students, legal workers, attorneys, and other people of color within the NLG.
