New York –(ENEWSPF)–November 6, 2014. Yesterday St. Louis Circuit Judge Rex Burlison ruled that denying marriage for same-sex couples in Missouri is unconstitutional.
Marc Solomon, national campaign director of Freedom to Marry and Kansas City native, released the following statement:
“We can be sure that in the ‘Show Me’ state, as Missourians get to know married same-sex couples and their families, they will see clearly that their marriages are based on love, commitment and an interest in caring for their families. Today’s ruling adds to the powerful momentum of victories from a bipartisan array of federal and state judges as we work to secure the freedom to marry nationwide.”
The news comes just over a month after a state ruling which found that Missouri must respect the legal marriages of same-sex couples performed elsewhere.
As of last month, a majority of Americans now live in a freedom to marry state, with 32 states currently issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples.
Freedom to Marry is the campaign to win marriage nationwide. We are pursuing our Roadmap to Victory by working to win the freedom to marry in more states, grow the national majority for marriage, and end federal marriage discrimination. We partner with individuals and organizations across the country to end the exclusion of same-sex couples from marriage and the protections, responsibilities, and commitment that marriage brings.
