Make a Gourd Birdhouse at Thorn Creek Nature Center on March 1

Registratio Required by Friday, February 27

Park Forest, IL—(ENEWSPF)—February 17, 2015. If you build it, wrens will come!   Join us for our Make a Gourd Birdhouse Workshop on Sunday, March 1, and discover how to create a welcoming nesting space for wrens and other cavity nesters in your own backyard.

You will build a birdhouse from a dried gourd, and once spring arrives, you can watch the wrens and other birds find their way to your gourd birdhouse.   Enjoy free entertainment in your backyard as you observe the birds gathering nesting materials, prepare their nest and finally raise their young.

Internationally-known artist Pat Moore, an instructor at the Tall Grass Arts Association that serves all of the South Suburbs, will help you create a natural style birdhouse from a gourd. You’ll learn how to prepare and paint a gourd birdhouse. There will be discussion on where to hang the birdhouse and the different cavity nesters that may visit your gourd birdhouse.

This workshop is for all ages. There are two sessions to choose from: 1-2 p.m. or 2:30-3:30 p.m. Children under age 6 must be accompanied by an adult. Cost is $10 per birdhouse, limit one per person. All materials are provided.

Registration is required for the Workshop by Friday, February 27. For more information or to register, please contact Thorn Creek Nature Center, 247 Monee Road, Park Forest at 708-747-6320 or [email protected].   The nature center is open Friday-Sunday, noon to 4 p.m. and trails are open daily, dawn to dusk.   There are many volunteer opportunities at the preserve such as staffing the nature center open hours, trail work, office skills, baking, assisting at programs and more.
