Park Forest Area League of Women Voters Hosts Meeting on the Impact of Fracking on Wednesday, September 18, 2013

Park Forest, IL –(ENEWSPSF)–September 4, 2013–The League of Women Voters of the Park Forest Area will host their opening meeting for the fall on Wednesday, September 18, at 6:30 PM with a potluck dinner at the home of Mary Lubertozzi, 3434 Attica Rd, Olympia Fields. The guest speaker will be Jennifer Hensley, Program Manager for the Illinois Chapter of the Sierra Club.  Ms. Hensley will speak on the issue of the impact of “fracking” for natural gas in Illinois.  “Fracking”, where high pressure water is pumped underground to fracture geologic formations to release natural gas, poses a threat to drinking water and other water resources. There are no federal regulations on this industry, so responsibility for protecting the environment from this activity has become the responsibility of individual states. The League of Women Voters supports efforts to control pollution of our natural resources in order to preserve the physical, chemical and biological integrity of ecosystems and to protect public health.

The meeting is open to the public and anyone interested in the topic is encouraged to attend to learn more about this important issue.

The League of Women Voters is a nonpartisan political organization which encourages informed and active participation in government, works to increase understanding of major public policy issues, and influences public policy through education and advocacy. The League does not support or oppose any candidate for public office. Anyone interested in promoting responsible government is invited to be a member. For more information about the program or membership in the League, please contact Mary Lubertozzi, 708-747-1359.
