Senate Committee Passes Repeal to Discriminatory Defense of Marriage Act

WASHINGTON–(ENEWSPF)–November 10, 2011.  The Senate Judiciary Committee today passed the Respect for Marriage Act, a bill that would repeal the discriminatory Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA). Earlier this year, the Obama administration announced it would not defend DOMA in any legal challenge, including a lawsuit brought on behalf of Edith “Edie” Windsor, who was forced to pay $363,000 tax on the estate of her late spouse, Thea Spyer. Windsor would not have had to pay the tax if she had been married to a man.
