In response to revelations of massive security failures in the Interstate Crosscheck program and apparent negligence in how 8 million voter records have been protected, Senator Bill Cunningham and Representative Silvana Tabares have called a hearing before the Senate Telecommunications and Information Technology Committee and the House Elections and Campaign Finance Committee.

Indivisible Chicago’s research into the Crosscheck program led to revelations that the systems storing Crosscheck data are vulnerable to even novice hackers and that Illinois, along with all other participating states, have exhibited negligence in how they carelessly send passwords and usernames meant to secure personally identifiable information.

In addition to security concerns, the Crosscheck program is overseen and misused by Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach to perpetuate myths about voter fraud to further his voter suppression agenda. States such as Indiana are currently facing litigation for their violations of the National Voter Registration Act under the Crosscheck program, Idaho has incorrectly cancelled voters due to misunderstandings about the data, and New Hampshire recently “miscommunicated” instructions to purge voters based on Crosscheck data.

The State Board of Elections, Indivisible Chicago, and expert witnesses from Edelson PC have been called to appear before the Joint Committee to address concerns about this program. The State Board of Elections has yet to formally consider leaving the program prior to the next data exchange scheduled for January.

The hearing is scheduled for Wednesday, November 15 at noon on the 6th floor of the Bilandic Building, 160 N. LaSalle Street in Chicago.
