Man Kills Self During Warrant Arrest


Park Forest, IL—(ENEWSPF)— The Park Forest Police Department issued a press release regarding the suicide of John Stanks on Saturday, September 1.  Stanks killed himself during an attempt by law enforcement officials to serve an arrest warrant.

At approximately 9 p.m. Saturday, Federal Marshalls, assisted by officers from the  Park Forest Police Department, attempted to serve a narcotics arrest warrant on John Stanks, 58.  The Marshalls learned that Stanks, 2607 Huntington Rd., Springfield , IL, was visiting a friend on Dogwood St. in Park Forest. 

They went to the Dogwood address and announced they had a warrant for him.  The Marshalls entered the home and located Stanks in an upstairs bedroom closet with a bullet wound to his head and a .45 cal. handgun near the body.

Stanks was transported St. James Hospital in Chicago Heights where he was pronounced dead.  He was then taken to the Cook County Medical Examiners Office where an autopsy was to be performed on Sunday.

Stanks had numerous arrests, including convictions for burglary, dangerous drugs and weapons offenses, according to the release.
