Mayor Emanuel Asks for Resignation of Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy; Attorney General Madigan Requests Justice Department Investigate the CPD


CHICAGO—(ENEWSPF)—December 1, 2015. Mayor Rahm Emanuel announced at a news conference today that he has asked for the resignation of Chicago Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy. McCarthy was not present at the news conference by the Mayor indicated that the Superintendent had, in fact, resigned. The announcement comes as angry protests continue in Chicago over the city’s response when Jason Van Dyke, a white police officer, shot and killed Laquan McDonald, a black teenager, sixteen times in October 2014.

Dashboard camera footage of the incident was released last week after a judge ordered that it be made public.

In addition, Attorney General Lisa Madigan today said a letter has been sent to the U.S. Attorney General asking the Department of Justice’s Civil Rights Division to open an investigation into the Chicago Police Department to see whether its practices violate the Constitution and federal law.
