Representative Jan Schakowsky Statement On Senate Obstruction of Gun Safety Legislation

WASHINGTON –(ENEWSPF)–June 20, 2016.   Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky released the following statement after the Senate failed to pass amendments preventing individuals on the “Do Not Fly List” from buying a gun and expanding our background check system:

“In the wake of the worst mass shooting in US history, the Republican majority in the Senate opted to do exactly nothing. Despite the undisputed fact that the vast majority of Americans are demanding action to address gun violence, despite the fact that Republicans rail against the threat of terrorism, they refused to prohibit people on the “No Fly List” from legally purchasing any gun they want — even a military style weapon. My constituents find that incredible. The Republicans also defeated a bill that would require universal background checks. This measure is particularly important for Chicago where 40% of the guns used in crimes were purchased next door in Indiana at gun shows without any background check. But this irresponsible Republican inaction will not stop us. Now it is time for Speaker Ryan to call a vote on these measures in the House of Representatives. Most Americans, including gun owners and NRA members have had enough. Public pressure is building and the time is at hand when politicians need to be more afraid of their constituents who want common sense gun laws than the NRA which opposes every last one of them.
