CHICAGO–(ENEWSPF)–May 14, 2015.   Sandee Dwire has spent more than a decade teaching high school after receiving both a bachelor’s degree in social science in 2004 and a master’s degree in history in 2011 from Roosevelt University.

(Dwire is pictured above at Roosevelt with Chris Chulos, associate dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and a history professor who has stayed in touch with his former student).

“I’m proud of my Roosevelt degrees, and I wanted to give back,” Dwire said recently on a return visit to her alma mater in tow with more than 100 of her students who are high school freshmen at McHenry High School in McHenry, Ill.

The high school students, who are in advanced-placement classes with Dwire, took a tour of Roosevelt’s Chicago Campus, participated in college-preparedness training and heard a lecture on sustainability by Roosevelt Associate Professor of Humanities Mike Bryson.

“Most of these teens had never visited a college campus. We wanted to give them a taste of what college is like so they can be prepared when it’s time to make decisions about college,” said Chris Chulos, College of Arts and Sciences associate dean and associate professor of history at Roosevelt.

While completing an independent study on the European Union with Chulos, Dwire had raised the idea of one day possibly bringing her students to Roosevelt for a visit.

“She had advanced-placement students who were interested in sustainability and I thought it might be a good way to connect them with our Sustainability Studies program and with Roosevelt University,” said Chulos.

During the event, Dwire and her students met everyone from an admissions officer to Roosevelt University President Chuck Middleton. “It was an incredible experience and I’m hoping that I can bring my students back to the University once a year,” said Dwire.

“It’s the kind of relationship that we’d like to see more of,” added Chulos, who helped organize the event on behalf of Roosevelt’s College of Arts and Sciences. “ We have many Roosevelt alumni who are teaching high school and we’d like to encourage them to bring their students back with them for a visit.”
