CHICAGO —(ENEWSPF)–June 19, 2015.  Artist and poet Ava Kadishson Schieber, who as an adolescent during the Holocaust hid on a small farm in Serbia, will offer reflections of survival during the Nazi occupation in a talk at DePaul University June 23.

Kadishson Schieber is the author of “Soundless Roar: Stories, Poems, and Drawings,” a collection of evocative line drawings, haunting poetry and succinct descriptions of her experiences during the war. For four years during the Nazi occupation, Kadishson Schieber used silence to protect herself. Once liberated, she emerged to find that only her mother survived the war. Her father perished at Auschwitz, and her sister’s passing was confirmed by a death certificate.

“Not since Primo Levi has so much light been cast on the darkest recesses of the human heart. This astonishing book is a tribute to the resilience of the human spirit,” said Barbara Rogan, author of “Rowing in Eden.”

Kadishson Schieber’s talk is part of a Facing History and Ourselves summer institute for educators at DePaul, which examines the Holocaust and human behavior.

Facing History and Ourselves is an international educational and professional development organization whose mission is to engage students of diverse backgrounds in an examination of racism, prejudice and anti-Semitism in order to promote the development of a more humane and informed citizenry.
