Cast Chosen for Anne Sexton’s ‘Transformations,’ Coming to Governors State University Center for Performing Arts April 24 and 25

University Park, Illinois–(ENEWSPF)–March 18, 2013 – The cast has been announced for Anne Sexton’s “Transformations,” coming to the Governors State University Center for Performing Arts on April 24 and 25, at 8 p.m.

“Transformations” is a production of GSU’s students, faculty, and staff. Dr. Patrick Santoro, an Assistant Professor of Theatre and Performance Studies, is directing the play.

Cast members are Cherish Brown, of Chicago; Lynne Clayton, of Park Forest; Keisha Dyson, of Chicago; Kimberly Hudson, of Park Forest; Keyana Marshall, of Chicago; Roshaunda Ross-Orta, of Homewood; and Deirdre Webb, of Chicago Heights.

“This cast of seven women brings an extraordinary range of talents that breathe life into the mind of Sexton’s words and world, taking her imaginative sensibilities and reflections on life to profound heights,” Dr. Santoro said.

Hailed by The New York Times as “a funny, mad, witty, frightening, charming, haunting book,” “Transformations” retells classic Grimm’s fairy tales. From “Cinderella” to “Rapunzel” to “Hansel and Gretel,” Sexton’s poem-stories are deliciously strange, personally intimate, and metaphorically rich. Dealing with issues of female identity, gender, familial relationships, and madness and suicide, Sexton’s work turns familiar stories into truly transformative tales.

“’Transformations’ tackles important social, cultural, and political issues relevant to today’s world,” Dr. Santoro said. “Staging Sexton’s work at GSU makes a significant contribution to the university’s mission to prepare students for civic engagement during and after their studies.”

Dr. Santoro said “Transformations,” while not the first show produced by GSU’s campus community, sets a tone for the innovative and socially conscious work that lies ahead with the continuing development of the university’s new Theatre and Performance Studies program.

Tickets for “Transformations” are $10. Student tickets are $5. To purchase tickets, or for further information, contact the GSU Center box office at www.centertickets.net or (708) 235-2222. The box office is open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and two hours prior to performances.

GSU Center is located on the campus of Governors State University, 1 University Parkway, University Park, Illinois.
