CHICAGO–(ENEWSPF)–March 15, 2015. More than 100 singers from the Chicago College of Performing Arts (CCPA) Conservatory Chorus and Chorale and Roosevelt University’s new Alumni Chorus will join Chicago Sinfonietta for two performances of Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana in March.
The Chicago Sinfonietta and Roosevelt University singers will perform the popular and emotionally charged Carmina Burana during shows being held at 8 p.m. Saturday, March 21 at Wentz Concert Hall, 171 E. Chicago Ave., Naperville and at 7:30 p.m. Monday, March 23 at Symphony Center, 220 S. Michigan Ave., Chicago.
The Chicago Sinfonietta will be conducted by its music director Mei-Ann Chen. The Roosevelt singers have been prepared for their performances with Chicago Sinfonietta by Cheryl Frazes Hill, associate professor of music education and director of choral activities at Roosevelt University. Frazes Hill is also the associate director of the Chicago Symphony Chorus.
“It is a joy to be able to bring our students and alumni together to sing this classic piece, which is truly an audience favorite,” said Frazes Hill, whose singers include current CCPA vocal performance majors as well as alumni, many who have gone on to professional singing careers.
Inspired by medieval poetry texts. Orff’s Carmina Burana explores the fickleness of fortune and wealth, the ephemeral nature of life, the joy of the return of Spring and the pleasures and perils of drinking, gluttony, gambling and lust and fortune.
“We are certainly looking forward to bringing this treasured piece to life on stage for audiences in both the city and the suburbs,” said Frazes Hill.
During the shows, the Chicago Sinfonietta also will be performing selections from Georges Bizet’s Carmen, Suites No. 1 and No. 2 and Emilio Solla’s A Galician Voyage: Concerto for Bagpipes, Piano and Orchestra. Tickets for the performances are $10 to $58 each and are available at www.chicagosinfonietta.org or by calling 312-248-1553.
