After Historically Cold Weather, District Will Re-open School Buildings after Winter Break
CHICAGO–(ENEWSPF)–January 7, 2014. Chicago Public Schools (CPS) students will resume classes on Wednesday after severe winds and dangerously cold temperatures forced closures on Monday and Tuesday. While District officials continue to monitor weather conditions, the expected rise in temperatures Wednesday indicates that conditions will be safe for students and staff to return.
“At CPS, the safety and security of our students is a top priority and was the greatest factor in our decision making to close schools during the extreme winds and cold,” said CPS CEO Barbara Byrd-Bennett. “With the weather conditions improving, students will be able to return to their classrooms tomorrow to receive the education they need to succeed in college, career, and life.”
The District has begun the process to notify parents of re-opening school buildings through all of its regular communication channels via robo-calls, emails, and through media outlets. Parents can also call (773) 553-3100 or visit the CPS website for more information. All regularly scheduled after-school and sporting activities will resume on Wednesday.
District officials are working to identify school make-up days that will be most beneficial to students and that will be least disruptive to the benchmarks of second semester. CPS will conduct outreach to parents and guardians as soon as a decision is made.
CPS continues to work in collaboration with other city departments to monitor weather conditions throughout the day until tomorrow to ensure that schools are prepared to host students and staff for a safe return for the second semester of School Year 2013- 2014.
