CHICAGO–(ENEWSPF)–January 6, 2014. DePaul University campuses will reopen and classes for the winter quarter will resume Tuesday, Jan. 7, after being closed Monday due to travel delays, dangerous road conditions and the heavy snowfall and extreme cold weather that affected Chicago and other parts of the country.
“We have reviewed the status of our campus properties related to snow removal and are in good shape to open for the winter term,” said Bob Janis, vice president of Facility Operations.
“We continue to do touch-ups on sidewalks, cross walks and parking lots and are continuing to work today with our excavation contractor to haul and dump quantities of built-up snow from certain areas to our empty lots,” Janis said. “We also are spreading salt and ice melts. Parking lots are nearly as clean as they can be with minimal capacity loss.”
Curbside parking in Lincoln Park is very limited, Janis said, noting that DePaul has capacity in the Clifton Parking Deck. Parking there is discounted for those with DePaul IDs.
DePaul decided to cancel classes and close campuses for Jan. 6, which was to be the start of the regular winter quarter, after hearing from many students, faculty and staff who were having problems getting back to Chicago from holiday break due to flight and train cancelations and dangerous roadways.
Students should check with their professors to learn what arrangements will be made for making up the classes that were canceled Monday, said Patricia O’Donoghue, interim provost.
During the winter quarter, students, faculty members and staff, especially those who are unaccustomed to Chicago weather, are reminded to wear layers when outside and plan extra time for getting around.
While classes are canceled for today, Jan. 6, residence halls are open and the Student Center on the Lincoln Park Campus will serve food from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. The Ray Meyer Fitness and Recreation Center also will be open during those hours.
