Fourth Annual Gender Matters Conference at Governors State University Presents An Evening with Dr. Jocelyn Elders, the 15th Surgeon General of the United States on April 12

University Park, Ill.—(ENEWSPF)–April 7, 2014 – The Gender Matters conference will present an evening with Dr. Joycelyn Elders, featuring her keynote address, “Evolving Gender Roles in the 21rst Century.” This event takes place in Sherman Music Hall Saturday, April 12, 2014, from 7-9 p.m.

The fourth Annual Gender Matters conference is honored to host Dr. Elders for a lively discussion on the status of women’s health, gender issues in health, education, economics and politics as well as gender equality, and questions if we are making progress in closing the gap.

“Elders’ focus on promoting healthy communities highlights our conference theme, Embodying Praxis, Engaging Solutions, as we work to bring together students, activists and researchers to discuss the ongoing role of gender in structuring society,” said Jason Zingsheim, conference chair.

Elders is a long-time proponent of calling for connecting research to practice. During the U.S. Senate hearings on her confirmation, Elders said, “I want to change the way we think about health by putting prevention first. I want to be the voice and vision of the poor and powerless. I want to change concern about social problems that affect health into commitment. And I would like to make every child born in America a wanted child.”

This event is free and open to the public. An Evening with Dr. Joycelyn Elders is made possible by the generous support of the College of Arts and Sciences, College of Education, College Health and Human Services, and an Intellectual Life Grant.

Governors State University is located at 1 University Parkway in University Park.
