Governor Quinn Announces Capital Funding for Morton College

CICERO–(ENEWSPF)–October 25, 2010. Governor Pat Quinn today announced $5 million in state funding for improvements at Morton College. The funding, provided through Illinois Jobs Now! capital program, will serve more than 5,000 students and create approximately 35 construction jobs.

“As a former community college teacher, I understand the value of our state’s community colleges in providing a high-quality education and stimulating local economies,” said Governor Quinn. “This project will create jobs, help our environment and – most importantly – help students at Morton College to have a safer and more modern place to learn.”

The funding will upgrade and replace campus heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems to improve the school’s energy efficiency. Campus security, lighting and fire alarm systems will also be upgraded. The funding will also help improve accessibility for persons with disabilities and upgrade parking areas.

The grant is being administered by the Capital Development Board (CDB), which oversees all state-funded, non-road construction projects.

“These funds will improve the learning environment at Morton College and make the campus safer, more accessible and more energy-efficient,” said CDB Executive Director Jim Riemer.

Founded in 1924, Morton College serves more than 5,000 students in a wide variety of academic areas and prepares students for continuing their education at four-year institutions. Morton College also provides extensive continuing adult education and career development classes.

Governor Quinn also highlighted that Illinois’ unemployment rate fell again in September, countering the national trend. The seasonally adjusted rate fell 0.2 points to 9.9 percent in September, while the national unemployment rate remained unchanged. Illinois has led the Midwest with 50,700 new jobs added this year.
