Governor Quinn Breaks Ground on Charter High School in Chicago’s Pilsen Neighborhood

CHICAGO–(ENEWSPF)–February 18, 2011. Governor Pat Quinn today broke ground on the Instituto Health Sciences Career Academy, Chicago’s first charter high school dedicated to preparing students for health science careers. The project will create 160 jobs and is supported by $12 million through the Illinois Jobs Now! capital construction program.

“By helping to build the Instituto Health Sciences Career Academy, our state is creating jobs and improving health care while expanding career opportunities for the thousands of students it will serve.” Governor Quinn said. “This project is an investment in education, in our communities and in Illinois’ future.”

The 100,000-square foot facility will be located in Chicago’s Pilsen neighborhood. The project will redevelop an existing warehouse into a state-of-the-art education facility that will also be used to provide healthcare services to 12,000 people served by the Instituto del Progreso Latino. The renovation and expansion project expects to receive Leadership in Energy Efficient Design (LEED) Silver Certification.

The project will be administered by Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity, the Illinois State Board of Education and the Illinois Community College Board. The state’s Illinois Jobs Now! capital construction program has created an estimated 155,000 jobs to date, and is expected to create or retain more than 439,000 jobs over six years.

The not-for-profit Instituto del Progreso Latino offers workforce development, adult education, youth development, youth education and citizenship preparation programs. More than 43,000 families have utilized its programs to learn English, earn GEDs or high school diplomas, increase job skills and find employment. Approximately 98 percent of services are provided at no cost to participants.
