Governors State University Hosting Annual High School Art Festival

University Park, IL-(ENEWSPF)- Governors State University will host the annual Southwest Suburban Conference High School Art Festival on February 15 and 16 in the university’s Visual Arts Gallery.

Sixteen area high schools are taking part in this year’s festival, which is designed to bring together students to view art work, and to have an enriching art experience that might help motivate their goals of pursuing art as they continue their education.

Students will take part in the festival between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Friday. Jeff Stevenson, director of GSU’s Visual Arts Gallery, said a total of 160 students, 10 from each school, are participating. Each student brings in a piece of their art, which will be displayed throughout the gallery. Students can vote on what they consider the best art on display. They will also hear speakers and participate in break-out sessions. Members of GSU’s art faculty will serve as judges at the festival. On Saturday, an open house is scheduled between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. for parents of the student artists, and other interested persons.

“The SWSC Visual Arts Group is very excited about having our annual art festival event at Governors State University,” said Phil Labriola, SWSC Visual Arts chairperson and an art teacher in Lincoln-Way High School District 210. “Staff members at GSU have been extremely accommodating and are providing our students with a wonderful experience. We look forward to working with the university not only this year, but in the future as well.”

GSU is hosting the SWSC Art Festival for the first time. Labriola said the festival has taken place for approximately the last 20 years.

Schools taking part in the festival are Andrew High School, Bolingbrook High School, Bradley-Bourbonnais High School, Homewood-Flossmoor High School, Joliet Central High School, Joliet West High School, Lincoln-Way Central High School, Lincoln-Way East High School, Lincoln-Way North High School, Lincoln-Way West High School, Lockport High School, Sandburg High School, Stagg High School, Thornridge High School, Thornton High School, and Thornwood High School.

GSU’s Visual Arts Gallery is located on the Governors State main campus, 1 University Parkway, University Park, Illinois. More information is available at www.govs.edu/gallery.
